Your Weekend: Pie-Baking Contest, Harvest Festival

With fall weather in full swing, seasonal goodies like apple pies and harvest-themed events are back in the villages and greater Hudson Valley. Here are a few happenings for this weekend:

Harvest in the Village/Sidewalk Sale

Where/When: Pleasantville Road (Briarcliff Manor business district) on Saturday, October 15 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Why go: With shopping and entertainment abound, Donald Borho of said the Briarcliff Manor Chamber of Commerce event has a "street fair atmosphere," and something for the whole family.

"We are having an air castle this year, a petting zoo," he said. "We also have some arts and crafts projects going on, food vendors and people selling things on the sidewalk."

There will also be face painting, a juggling clown and live music, courtesy of Mike and Miriam Risko of Mike Risko Music School.

Apple Pie-Baking Contest

Where/When: Pleasantville Farmers' Market (Memorial Plaza) on Saturday, October 15 (market opens at 8:30 a.m.; judging decisions/pie cutting to begin around 11 a.m.; market closes at 1 p.m.)

Why go: What's more enticing than the smell of a homemade apple pie in fall? There will be three categories in this year's contest: 100 percent from scratch pies, partially from scratch pies and kid chef pies. Organizers from the Pleasantville Farmers' Market Committee said to expect between 30 and 50 participants this year—that's a lot of pie!

Sarah Rogovin, who has organized the competition for the past two years, said apple should be the primary ingredient in each creation, but the committee "encourages creativity" and has been known to judge savory apple pies, tarts and other treats.

The introduction of a "junior chef" category this year is meant to "encourage parents and children to bake together," said Rogovin.

Judges will base their scores on three criteria—texture, taste and appearance.

If you don't fancy yourself a chef, stick around to enjoy a slice of pie at 11 a.m. after the judging!

Where/When: , Roselle Avenue, Pleasantville on Saturday, October 15 at 9:30 a.m.

Why go: Grab your friend, sibling, mom or dad and form a team of two! Must be 12 or older to participate. Prizes and trophies for winners.

Pricing: $15 per person. Register here. All money raised will be donated to the Interfaith Emergency Pantry of Pleasantville. Refreshments will be for sale at the event.

Where/When: Along the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail on Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16. Times vary.

Why go: Here is another local favorite! Enjoy seeing friends along the trail, listening to music, making kites and more. It is a unique event that celebrates the Old Croton Aqueduct! Events throughout the weekend in Yonkers, Hastings, Dobbs, Irvington, Ossining and Sleepy Hollow. This year, join the Rivertown Roll, a bike ride along the Aqueduct, which features a 10-mile family ride or a 25-mile group ride. It starts at 9:30 a.m on Sunday. You can register here.

Where/When: Patriot's Park, 121 North Broadway, Tarrytown on Saturday, October 15 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Why go: Crafts for kids, local school exhibits, Aquefest on the trail, book fair at the library, and vendors. Enjoy the farmers market too and stop by to ! Sponsored by Tarrytown Environmental Advisory Council.

Teatown Fall Festival

Where/When: Teatown Lake Reservation, 1600 Spring Valley Rd., Ossining on Saturday, October 15 from 11 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Why go: Come carve a pumpkin, make a scarecrow, face painting, meet animals from Teatown, music, food and more. A bee keeping lecture, Muscoot Farm animals, hayrides, archery too-really, something for all ages! Free shuttle bus will be available from parking area at IBM T.J. Watson Center on Route 134.

Pricing: Members are free to enter. Non-member adult is $10 and non-member kids is $5. Fun pass available for members is $20 and non-members is $25 (includes admission). You can pay per activity or purchase fun pass if child is going to engage in more than a few activities—keep in mind, some are free!

Saturday Storytime & Craft

Where/When: , One Library Rd., Briarcliff Manor on Saturday, October 15 from 11 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

Why go: A short story and craft that relates to one of the books. Best for ages 2.5-6 years old with adult. Please register in advance at 914-941-7072.
