Annual Effie Gordon Tea to be Dedicated to Dr. Maya Angelou

In honor of her priceless contributions, the annual Effie Gordon Tea will be dedicated to the memory of Dr. Maya Angelou, who passed away today at the age of 86.

Effie Gordon was a resident of Rye and a past president of the Port Chester/Rye branch of the NAACP (PCRNAACP).  She later went on to be president of the New York State Conference of the NAACP.

Each year, the PCRNAACP recognizes Mrs. Gordon with a tea fundraiser.  This year’s event will be a little different.  The organizers are asking attendees to take an active role in the event by ‘hosting a table.’  The ‘host’ will decorate their table using their own tea sets or chinaware and invite family and friends to join them.  The host will also be asked to bring in a dish to share.  The dish can be tea sandwiches, deviled eggs, mini quiche, a cake, cookies or the like.  The PCRNAACP will supply the tea and beverages, tablecloths and napkins.   An added dimension to the event will have the table host prepare a short piece to recognize a woman in their life or in history whom they admire and why.  This profile will be shared with the group.
