Children's Summer Art Classes at Rye Arts Center

Kids will explore their creativity in areas including music, film, theatre, and art for the end of July and month of August.

Here's a look at the Rye Arts Center's summer programs for children.

Morning Creative Arts Program

In the "Morning Creative Arts Program" children ages four through 12 can explore their creative potential, while also having fun learning about art movements and culture throughout history. For each age group, (ages 4-6, 7-9, 10-12) education will be woven into classes which include drawing, painting, mixed media, sculpture, printmaking, creative movement, storytelling, music and dance. All elements will be age appropriate, and a fun way to spend the summer months.

Available weeks are July 26-30, which will focus on cultural arts; August 2-6, when children will learn about the concept and movement of surrealism; and August 9-13, which will feature educational sessions on expressionism. The fee per week is $260 and the hours are Monday-Friday, from 9 am to noon. Those interested are encouraged to register as soon as possible, as spots are being filled fast.

Musical Theatre Workshop

For young ones hoping to be the next big stars of their generation, the center will help develop their craft with a Musical Theatre Workshop with Michael Awusie. Intended for ages eight through 13, children will learning line and choreography for a production of West Side Story.

Those hoping to enroll can choose between the weeks of August 16-20, August 23-27, or August 30-September 3. The fee is $350 for the week and hours are Monday through Friday, 9 am to 4 pm. Register as soon as possible, spots are limited.

"Reel Thrills" Digital Filmmaking

Want to produce your own film? Students ages nine and up are invited to attend the "Reel Thrills" Digital Filmmaking course with David Dunn. The week of August 30 through September 3, movie buffs can sharpen their skills in writing and direct their own short films, complete with learning the basics of film making, screenplay writing, the importance of storyboarding, camera basics, lighting, composing a soundtrack and converting the finished product to DVD.

The hours are Monday throug Friday, 10 am to 2 pm, and the fee is $290.

Group Guitar for Beginners

In this week-long class, students will learn the fundamentals necessary to begin playing the guitar. Students must supply their own guitar, and a lesson book will be included. Children ages eight to 10 are welcome for the week of August 23-27, from 5 to 6 pm. The fee is $100 for the five-day learning session.

Introduction to the Piano

For children ages six through eight, this class is designed to give those in their young years an exploration of the keyboard and a general understanding of reading music. It's a great introduction to private lessons. Keyboards will be provided during class. A lesson book is also included. Classes are available Monday through Friday, from 12:30 to 1:30 pm, and the fee for the week is $100.
