Court Refuses to Hear Port Chester Appeal on Firefighter Referendum

The refusal means a public vote can go forward.

PORT CHESTER, NY — The Village of Port Chester’s decision to eliminate all paid firefighters is subject to a vote by the public.

That is the result of a decision by the state Court of Appeals to refuse to hear the village’s appeal of a Supreme Court decision, according to the Journal News.

The village trustees voted May 2 to eliminate the professional firefighters in a cost-cutting measure. That affected the Village of Rye Brook that had an intermunicipal agreement that said Port Chester had to supply a professional firefighter to staff the Rye Brook firehouse during the overnight hours.
