Firefighters Across Region Respond To 'Large Freon Leak' At Costco
The ongoing hazmat emergency in Port Chester was originally reported as heavy smoke. Crews soon determined a chemical leak was the cause.

PORT CHESTER, NY — A developing major hazmat situation at a Westchester County Costco has emergency officials asking people to avoid the area.
Just after 2 p.m. Monday afternoon, the Port Chester Fire Department responded to the Costco on Westchester Ave. on a report of smoke in the structure. The first units to arrive quickly determined it was not smoke from a fire at the scene, but that there was a large freon leak on the 2nd floor.
Fire officials said the cause of the leak is being investigated, and emergency crews are still operating at the scene.
