Man Drowned In Byram River, Port Chester Police Confirm

The swimmer went under the surface near the bridge where I-95 crosses the river, according to a witness. He never resurfaced.

PORT CHESTER, NY — Police say a man who was trying to beat the heat with a swim in the Byram River lost his life after drowning in the waterway near the Connecticut border.

On Tuesday, at about 4:30 p.m., Port Chester police received an emergency 911 call reporting that a man who went into the Byram River to swim, went under the water and never re-surfaced. The caller directed first responders to an area under the I-95 bridge where the man had last been seen 30 minutes earlier.

Emergency crews searched the shoreline, by land, air and water, but did not immediately find the missing swimmer.

With the assistance of Greenwich police, the U.S. Coast Guard, Westchester County Police, the Rye Police Department and New Rochelle police, the victim was found in about 10 feet of water. Greenwich Police Department divers were able to recover the man and take him to the Port Chester side of the river where he was pronounced deceased.

The identity of the 52-year-old man is being withheld pending notification to his family, who live outside the U.S.
