NYS Assembly Speaker Heastie, WCC President, Dr. Miles to Attend NAACP Luncheon

7th Annual Freedom Fund Luncheon Focuses on Keys to Success: Parents, Students, Community and Schools

The Port Chester/Rye Branch of the NAACP, is proud to announce that New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie will deliver the Keynote Address at their annual Freedom Fund Luncheon. Also, a special award will be bestowed upon the first black president of Westchester Community College, Dr. Belinda Miles, who will also address the attendees. The 7th annual luncheon takes place on Saturday, October 17 at 12 noon at the Copacabana Restaurant on Main Street in Port Chester. Tickets are $60 per person and seating is limited.

Speaker Heastie is the first black speaker of the Assembly in New York State. He has stressed the need to help improve the lives of all New Yorkers. He is committed to establishing a true living wage, ensuring women’s equality, securing every child’s access to a solid education, and enacting affordable housing.

Representing the 83rd A.D. in the Bronx, Heastie has been called one of the most active Assembly members by his colleagues. He quickly became one of the leading advocates for the construction of the new schools in New York City. In addition, he has secured funds for housing, education, after school programming, health and human services, jobs readiness and computer training programs.

Since her arrival at WCC, Dr. Miles has led the college to its new status as an Achieving the Dream member institution focused on increased levels of student success, overseen a successful Middle States accreditation visit, and expanded K-12 partnerships in order to increase college readiness. WCC has a satellite location at the Port Chester Middle School.
