Port Chester Pulls Out of Rye Town Dissolution Proposal

Support for the move has died out.

The Town of Rye will continue to exist, as a move to dissolve it appears to be over this week.

Mamaroneck and Port Chester, which border the small town, have pulled out of the plan, reports The Journal News.

The stumbling blocks appear to be the potential for increased taxes for some residents, in Rye Neck particularly, and confusion and chaos during the transition. The trustee boards of Mamaroneck and Port Chester both voted this week to end their participation in negotiations.

Rye Town Supervisor Joe Carvin, who supported the plan to dissolve the entity, told The Journal News that some officials were more concerned about saving their jobs than consolidation.

“There’s no doubt in my mind, unfortunately. You go into politics for a number of reasons ... to effect positive change or you want to get compensation out of it,” Carvin told reporter Mark Lungariello. “Those who went into it for compensation won and those who wanted reform lost.”
