Joyce Mannel is an English-as-a-Second-Language teacher at Port Chester High School

Joyce Mannel, who teaches English as a second language at Port Chester High School, is featured in an article in the May issue of Experience Life Magazine.

In the national magazine, Mannel addresses an issue familiar to many women: how to balance their own needs and interests with those of their children.

“It’s as though I had hung parts of myself away in a closet – parts that I had once been or had aspired to be,” she says concerning her focus on mothering her daughter.

She also admits she neglected her own health, which eventually led to an eye-opening visit with her medical doctor. Mannel used her experience as a teacher to give herself “assignments” and a report card-like progress report complete with comments such as “always completes her assignments” and “doesn’t apply herself.”

Her motto became, “let’s just try” and it lead to an inspiring year-long success story that brought her better health, weight loss and a journey of self-discovery.

Her words of wisdom for other women seeking to make life changes: Have faith. Come up with small short-term goals that lead to your bigger ones. Forgive yourself as often as you need to.
