12-Year-Old Threatened Administrative Staff At School In Port Jefferson: Cops

Officers from the 6th Precinct are investigating, Suffolk police said. The nature of the threat was not immediately clear.

PORT JEFFERSON, NY — A 12-year-old student verbally threatened administrative staff at the Jefferson Academic Center in Port Jefferson, prompting an investigation on Thursday morning, Suffolk police said.

The department received a report that a student "made a verbal threat directed toward administrative staff" at the Spring Road school at 11:15 a.m., according to police. Officers from the 6th Precinct are investigating, police said.

The nature of the threat, as well as other details were not immediately released by police.

The center is part of Eastern Suffolk Board of Cooperative Educational Services.

In a statement to Patch, Chief Operating Officer Ryan Ruf said, "We are aware of alleged verbal threats made by one of our students earlier this afternoon at Jefferson Academic Center. Once staff was made aware of these alleged threats, the student was immediately removed from the classroom."

Ruf went on to say that the Jefferson Academic Center staff contacted the student’s home district and police.

"Eastern Suffolk BOCES is cooperating with the police in its investigation," Ruf said. "Consistent with the law, Eastern Suffolk BOCES is prohibited from releasing any identifying information about the student."
