Be A Part of Teen Read Week 2011

Celebrating Teen Read Week 2011 at the Port Jefferson Teen Center. PICTURE IT @ YOUR LIBRARY is this year's theme and will be held Oct.16-22.

Teen Read Week began in 1998 when the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) wanted to share the joy of reading and the benefits it instills on young adults in all communities.

This year's theme is PICTURE IT @ YOUR LIBRARY and runs from Oct. 16 - 22.

The Port Jefferson Free Library Teen Center is encouraging young adults to read graphic novels and other illustrated materials that we have in the collection. Young Adult Librarians promote Teen Read Week by creating eye catching displays and special events.

Teens will be able to imagine different fictional worlds while opening their minds to the power of literature. Research shows that teens who read for fun have better test scores and are more likely to succeed in their future endeavors. We are encouraging teens to read for pleasure and to visit the Teen Center during Teen Read Week 2011.

Why is it important to celebrate? For a lot of reasons! In today's technological world teens have many options for entertainment, so it's important to remind them to spend time reading for pleasure. It's free, fun, and can be done anywhere! The Port Jeff Teen Center will be creating READ posters of teens reading their favorite book of the year. They will pose with a novel and have their poster hung up in the Teen Center through the month of October. Many celebrities and book characters have also been models for the popular American Library Association READ posters.
