Caroline Doctorow and the Steamrollers Rolled into Port Jeff.

Review of Caroline Doctorow concert in Port Jeff Harbor

The opening of  Greater Port Jefferson-Northern Brookhaven Arts Council's third season of the Harborfront Park Concert Series, on July 6 offered up a delightful evening of exceptional music and song to an audience relaxing on the park’s main lawn of the recently restored Chandlery.

Like the refreshing summer evening breezes rising and falling across the harbor, Caroline Doctorow and The Steamrollers, “a leading force on the folk music scene,” easily lived up to the rave reviews they have received this season.”

Ms. Doctorow has produced seven folk Americana albums and is well deserving of her reputation for having a sweet and soft “velveteen” voice. Her solid and steady playing of the rhythm guitar in this band is also to be commended as was demonstrated is The Steamrollers melodic rendition of “Sweet Melissa” also performed by the Allmond Brothers.

In addition to this number, memorable performances of the folk /gospel classic “Wade in the Water,” John Hartford‘s “Gentle on My Mind,” and Bob Dylan’s “I want You,” were something that happens at special moments when a band finds it true self and true voice. This was one of those evenings and Coroline Doctorow’s voice and song writing was a big part of that.

The Steamrollers are an ensemble of uniquely accomplished musicians and performers.  Andrew Carillo on lead guitar is exceptionally versatile on his classic fender, moving up and down the fret board with grace and ease. Through a vintage Marshal amp he delivers soft yet vibrant notes, tones and riffs in both his blues and country performances. “Gentle on My Mind,” and Mainline Prosperity were fine examples of his talent. After hearing and seeing his work, it is easy to understand why he “is a much-sought-after session and touring musician” with a diverse discography to his credit.

Mick Hargreaves bassist, vocalist, song writer, and filmmaker, is also a very accomplished musician. His presence in the band is strong and appealing. Playing a beautifully crafted acoustic bass, his blues solo in E minor was as close to the Old Delta Blues masters as I have heard or seen anywhere. He certainly had his “mojo” working in this performance.

To round out the sound and add the country to the country, every band needs a Fiddle player. Gary Oleyar plays the electric fiddle for the Steamrollers. This unique instrument enables Mr. Oleyar to add electric tones and notes to the pieces. Featured in Coroline’s Doctorow’s own “Sweet to Me,” you get a sense that you are listening to concert performer versed in classis as well as country blues music. He has toured with Kenny Loggins, Jim Messina, as well as performing in Broadway shows including Evita, Pump Boys and Dinettes, and Big River.

The Performing Arts Council, Department of Parks and Recreation, and Northern Brookhaven Arts Council have a lot to be proud of. They have started off the season with a truly inspiring and accomplished musical group. Caroline Doctorow and the Steamrollers were as perfect as a summer evening in the park where breezes and a golden sunset were only rivaled by the sweet, melodic sounds of the band.
