Get Ready for Summer Movies Based on Children’s Books

Time for those summer movies based on beloved children's books.

The annual onslaught of movie adaptations is about to begin. In the next two months, we can expect Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer (June 10), based on the popular intermediate fiction series by Megan McDonald;  Mr. Popper’s Penguins (June 17), a Jim Carrey project based on the 1938 classic by Richard and Florence Atwater;  Disney’s Winnie the Pooh (July 15); and the long awaited last Hogwart’s episode – Harry Potter and the Deadly Hallows: Part II.

Sometimes film versions of beloved books are a wonderful thing when they get it just right.  Holes, To Kill a Mockingbird, Nanny McPhee – all come to mind as faithful adaptations that only enhance the original story.  However, sometimes the films are cringe-worthy and leave you wondering if the creative minds behind them had even read the book on which the movie is based. One thing is for sure, you can never go wrong with the original, so stop by at the Library and pick up a copy of the book, either in print, on CD or Playaway (an Mp3 preloaded with the audiobook) before you see the movie. You’ll be glad you did!
