Goals vs. Resolutions

Don't let the time of year dissuade you - goals can be made at any time so make one today and be a success.

Similar but not the same. I have been in the habit of asking clients in January for their fitness goal for the year, most never have an answer but with some thought will come up with one. I have seen all those goals achieved.

Now resolutions, on the other hand, are not realized as often. Hhhmmm!!!

The success story that always comes to mind is when I asked a dear friend Denise  (a client at Personal Training Institute) in January  2007 her fitness goal. Perplexed, she shared that she had never really thought of one. After consideration, she said she wanted to compete in a triathlon. FYI, Denise was not a cyclist, nor a runner but she was a swimmer.

In May 2007, she participated in a rookie triathlon, the swim was in a pool and the distances were short. She completed it and looked for other opportunities. Denise started training and finished the Cedar Beach Triathlon in October 2007 at 2:11. That year the Cedar Beach Triathlon was a 3/4 mile swim; 17 mile bike and 5K run. What an outstanding accomplishment, and we were very proud.

Denise  finished the NYC Triathlon and most recently participated in the Ragnar Relay  (a 200 mile 12 person relay from Woodstock to NYC) raising $810 for Strength for Life.

I suppose the moral of this story is that one simple question started a chain of events, and successes.

As I am not the first to think about this - I googled exactly this "goals vs resolutions" and came up with a very nice article by Marie Disbrow.

We share similar ideas in planning. I am a "baby step" planner. Set yourself up for success!

"Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success."
