Long Island Carjacker With Knife, Hammer Nabbed In NYC: Cops

He smashed a Volkswagen window, threatened a woman with a knife, and sped away before being caught with the help of the NYPD, cops say.

CORAM, NY — A robber wielding a knife and a hammer attacked a woman in her Coram driveway and then sped away in her SUV early Saturday morning, only to be caught later in Manhattan with the help of the NYPD, Suffolk police said.

A woman had been sitting in her 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan in her driveway off Teller Avenue, when she was Diorgenis Cruz-Torres approached her around 12:26 a.m., using a hammer to smash the driver’s side window of the Volkswagen and threatened her with a knife, pushing her away from the car before taking off, according to police.

Suffolk detectives, with the help of an NYPD officer from Highway Patrol Unit 3, tracked the SUV to Sutton Place at 58th Street by using the woman's cell phone, police said.

Cruz-Torres was taken into custody at the NYPD's Midtown North Precinct.

He was later transferred into the custody of 6th Squad detectives at processed at their Selden precinct.

Cruz-Torres, 22, of Coram, was charged with first-degree robbery, a felony, and was held overnight at the 6th Precinct for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday.
