Man Who Shot At Cop During Middle Island Foot Chase Arrested: PD

The man shot at an officer after being involved in a car crash in late December, police say.

SELDEN, NY — A Middle Island man has been charged in the attempted shooting of a Suffolk County police officer in Middle Island on Dec. 23. Leroy Jones, 27, was charged Sunday with aggravated attempted murder, second-degree attempted murder, first-degree criminal use of a firearm, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident with personal injury.

He was scheduled to be held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and appear Monday in Central Islip court.

Jones in December fired a handgun at an officer as he tried to run away from a crash, police said.

A woman was driving a Nissan Pathfinder westbound on Middle Country Road on the night of Dec. 23 when a Volvo sedan heading south on Wellington Road smashed into the passenger side of her car, police said. When a police officer in a marked car arrived at the scene, Jones tried to run, authorities said. The officer gave chase. While running, Jones shot at the officer and missed, police said. The officer returned fire and continued the pursuit, though Jones initially got away, police said.

The SUV driver and a woman passenger were rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital with minor injuries.
