Mather TCU Unit Earns Top Grade

Mather Hospital announced on Monday that for the second year in a row, its 16-bed transitional care unit was given a five-star rating by U.S. News & World Report.

The facility is described as a "short-term healthcare facility where Mather patients receive the focused care they require before being discharged home or to another facility for those requiring extended therapies."

“I congratulate our TCU staff for the high quality of care that has once again earned them this prestigious distinction,” said Mather Hospital President Kenneth Roberts.

According to the Mather website, the unit was launched in 2007, as the first-of-its-kind on Long Island. It started as a five-year pilot program with four others in New York State, eventually moving on to become a full-time facility.

Patients considered for the TCU include:

• patients needing physical rehabilitation
• recent stroke sufferers
• post surgical patients
• patients undergoing therapy for systemic infections
• patients newly diagnosed with diabetes and requiring patient/caregiver education
