A 15-year-old male student was arrested on Monday, police say.

A 15-year-old Mount Sinai High School student was arrested on Monday after police say he posted a threat of violence on social media directed toward the high school.

High school officials notified police after they were alerted by parents and students regarding an anonymous threat posted on a social media application Yik Yak that stated there would be a shooting and bombing at the school on Tuesday, police said.

Following an investigation by Sixth Squad detectives, a student was arrested and charged with making a terrorist threat, a felony. The teen will appear at Suffolk County Family Court in Central Islip on Tuesday.

Mount Sinai Superintendent Gordon Brosdal sent home to parents on Monday addressing the growing popularity of Yik Yak, which allows users to write anonymous posts that can be seen by anyone within a defined geographic region.

“The anonymity of these posts allows individuals who may have malicious intent to write comments about others that may be hurtful, harassing and sometimes quite disturbing,” Brosdal wrote.
