Port Jefferson School District Hosts Computer Science Carnival

Dozens of students and families signed up for the Port Jefferson School District’s first Computer Science Carnival held on Dec. 5, a perfect time to recognize National Computer Science Education Week, which is Dec. 6-12. The event, spearheaded by Earl L. Vandermeulen High School math teacher Winifred Kuemmel, was an opportunity to encourage and create awareness of what the high school offers rising Port Jefferson students.

The carnival was set up with booths serviced by more than 20 high school student volunteers as well as science and math teachers. They included binary magic, binary bracelets, binary decoding, a drone obstacle course, computer labs and more. The colorful and creative event also had a snack stand offering popcorn and water bottles. Students signed in and visited each booth to learn a bit about some of the skills they will need in the ever-expanding STEM fields.

“This was a great way for our high school students to actually share their own developing computational thinking skills and the basics of computer science with the younger students,” Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Principal John Ruggero said. “We are grateful for all those who came out to support what will certainly become a tradition in the next years.”
