PORT JEFFERSON, NY — Port Jefferson School District officials have set a date for a community vote on Dec. 12 to decide on two proposed capital bond projects.

The proposal has two propositions covering an array of much-needed facilities renovations, including Proposition One, which would approve $23.1 million to focus on key instruction and infrastructure needs, officials said.

Proposition No. 2 would use $1.8 million to install a turf field at the high school to increase field use playability for all students, but it is contingent on the passage of Proposition One, according to officials.

Proposition One includes improvements to indoor air quality, maximizing the efficiencies of building spaces, updating bathrooms to meet Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines and enhancing student safety by bringing all programs into the main building at the middle school and high school, officials said.

Schools Superintendent Jessica Schmettan said the district has worked hard to maintain its school buildings "through regular updates."

“This bond is necessary to complete larger scale projects. It restores, renovates and modernizes our buildings," she added.
