Activist, Educator Honored for 46 Years of Service by LWV

Debbie Shichtman, PhD, has dedicated her time to improving the lives of others.

A longtime activist and professional educator was honored by the League of Women Voters of Port Washington-Manhasset for her 46 years of service to the community on May 31 at the Swan Club.

Debbie Shichtman, PhD, was joined by family, friends and elected officials in the celebration of her accomplishments.

Speakers went into detail on Shichtman’s early life and how she has worked to improve the lives of others:

  • By working tirelessly to improve everything in the community from water to garbage processing.
  • By serving the LWV through holding leadership roles at the state, county and local levels. Always seeking improvements to the democratic process, including access to voting and voting procedures.

Elected officials who personally thanked Dr. Shichtman for her contributions to the community were Town of North Hempstead Clerk Wayne Wink, Jr., Town Receiver of Taxes Charles Berman, Town Councilwoman Anna Kaplan, Town Councilwoman (and LWV member for over 50 years) Lee Seaman. Town Councilman Peter Zuckerman, and Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton. Congratulatory messages and citations were sent by US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, NYS Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, NYS Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel, Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano, Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth, and Town Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio.

All agreed that Dr. Shichtman earned the evening’s honor and the continued respect of the community.
