The Port Washington Police District (PWPD) recently held a ceremonial groundbreaking to mark the start of construction on its new headquarters at 128 Main Street, culminating a decades-long effort to modernize the District’s facilities and enhance public safety. The new headquarters will replace the District’s current facility, originally built in 1958, which no longer meets the operational, technological, and space needs of a modern police department.
“This is a historic day for our District and our community,” said PWPD Commissioner Sean McCarthy, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners. “This project represents years of careful planning, evaluation, and responsible financial management. We made a commitment to do this the right way, and today we are proud to see that commitment become reality.”
The need for a new facility has been well documented for decades, with studies and internal evaluations consistently concluding that the existing headquarters had reached the end of its useful life. Over the years, the District explored numerous alternatives—including renovations and multiple potential sites—but none proved viable until the acquisition of the Main Street property.
“Getting to this point has been a long journey,” said Chief Robert Del Muro. “This conversation began decades ago, and it took years of evaluating options, planning, and waiting for the right opportunity. This project is the result of that persistence and a shared commitment to doing what is best for the community.”
The new facility will provide modern accommodations for officers and staff, improved accessibility for residents, and dedicated community space for meetings, training, and outreach programs. It will also address longstanding challenges at the current headquarters, including space constraints, outdated infrastructure, and non-compliance with modern standards.
