Port Washington Police District Breaks Ground on New Headquarters After Decades-Long Planning Effort

Groundbreaking Represents Culmination of a Decades-Long Effort to Modernize the District's Facilities and Enhance Public Safety

The Port Washington Police District (PWPD) recently held a ceremonial groundbreaking to mark the start of construction on its new headquarters at 128 Main Street, culminating a decades-long effort to modernize the District’s facilities and enhance public safety. The new headquarters will replace the District’s current facility, originally built in 1958, which no longer meets the operational, technological, and space needs of a modern police department.

“This is a historic day for our District and our community,” said PWPD Commissioner Sean McCarthy, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners. “This project represents years of careful planning, evaluation, and responsible financial management. We made a commitment to do this the right way, and today we are proud to see that commitment become reality.”

The need for a new facility has been well documented for decades, with studies and internal evaluations consistently concluding that the existing headquarters had reached the end of its useful life. Over the years, the District explored numerous alternatives—including renovations and multiple potential sites—but none proved viable until the acquisition of the Main Street property.

“Getting to this point has been a long journey,” said Chief Robert Del Muro. “This conversation began decades ago, and it took years of evaluating options, planning, and waiting for the right opportunity. This project is the result of that persistence and a shared commitment to doing what is best for the community.”

The new facility will provide modern accommodations for officers and staff, improved accessibility for residents, and dedicated community space for meetings, training, and outreach programs. It will also address longstanding challenges at the current headquarters, including space constraints, outdated infrastructure, and non-compliance with modern standards.

“At H2M architects + engineers, our mission is rooted in one simple idea: we build communities. Today’s groundbreaking for the new Port Washington Police District Headquarters is a meaningful expression of that commitment, creating a facility that supports public safety, civic pride, and long‑term community well‑being. We are grateful to Chief Robert Del Muro, Police Commissioners McCarthy, Mullins and Meyer, and the entire project team for their trust, collaboration, and shared vision. We are honored to help deliver an innovative headquarters that will serve the Port Washington Police District and the community it protects for generations to come.”

Located in the heart of Port Washington, the new headquarters will enhance visibility, accessibility, and response capabilities while reinforcing the District’s presence in the community.

The District has already completed key preparatory steps, including property acquisition, site cleanup, and environmental review. Construction is expected to proceed in phases, beginning with site and foundation work.

“This project represents not just an investment in infrastructure, but in the future of public safety in Port Washington,” McCarthy added. “We are building a facility that will serve this community for generations to come.”
