Community Corner

Bagel Store Warms Bellies and Hearts

Proud community supporter L.I. Bagel goes the extra mile to help the needy during the COVID-19 crisis.

John Compitello, Managing Partner of Long Island Bagel in Glen Cove, has always been extraordinarily generous in the community, whether it’s volunteering, making donations or otherwise supporting Glen Cove. So friend and Glen Cove resident County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton wasn’t the least bit surprised when John called her about providing food to the needy during the COVID-19 outbreak that has stopped or dramatically reduced incomes for many local families.

Delia jumped into action immediately by reaching out to Cynthia Lopez with the Glen Cove Child Day Care Center, Rod Watson with Glen Cove United and Spiro Tsirkas with Glen Cove Youth Bureau. These organizations have both been very proactive in gathering food and monetary donations to help needy families, especially now that many are out of work. “This outbreak is devastating for us all, DeRiggi-Whitton said. “Being able to help families that are having a hard time feeding their children because they are not working is the least we can do and is so important.”

Glen Cove Mayor Tim Tenke remarked on how he knows it is difficult for people to come out right now and appreciates John stepping up and giving to the community when they need it the most. He also thanked Long Island Bagels and other necessary businesses and their staff for staying open and providing residents with the essentials they need to get through this quarantine period.

“Long Island Bagels has been here for 15 years,” Compitello said. “I love to be able to share my success with the community, especially during this upsetting time. Anyone who needs us, know that we’re here for you.” Following the press conference, Delia delivered bagels to some senior citizen members who are self-quarantined and another that is undergoing chemotherapy.

Please contact Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton’s office if you are either in need of food or would like to make a donation of food or money to a local organization on behalf of those in need. Her office contact information is 516-571-6211 or dderiggiwhitton@nassaucountyny.gov.
