Dolphin Bookshop Cafe Can Now Serve Food to Go
Village reverses decision on Port Washington cafe.
On Thusday morning, the reversed a decision that at the , giving the store the opportunity to take down their "no takeout" sign.
"The board is going to meet again at the end of the month [in July] to draw up the final paperwork," said owner Patti Vunk. "But as far as I know we're approved."
The decision is effective immediately, and the adoption is expected to be finalized at the Board of Zoning Appeal's July 25 meeting, said Baxter Estates Village Clerk Yvonne Whitcomb.

But, she pointed out, the restriction was based on the cafe's earlier proposal, which stated that goods would be sold for consumption on premises.
"We had complaints about people leaving with coffee cups," Whitcomb said. And because of the decision format that was based on the earlier proposal, "it had to be followed through."

Happy with the news, Vunk and her employees are looking to enhance cafe offerings as they anticipate more traffic. Vunk is looking into adding items such as soups, salads and paninis. "We also want to be very conscious of local suppliers and using local farms," she said.
Vunk is grateful for the community support she received, adding, "It was beautiful having that many people rallying for the Dolphin."
