On the evening of October 5, Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton joined her fellow County legislators and many others representing various organizations and residents who came to show their support for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Honorees for the event were Dr. Virginia E. Maurer and Dr. Eric D. Seitelman. Dr. Maurer is the Chief of Breast Surgery and Director of Breast Health Program with Winthrop University Hospital. She is the founder of The Maurer Foundation, a nonprofit that focuses on breast health education. Dr. Seitelman is an oncologist with South Nassau Communities Hospital. He was instrumental in the development of the whole picture of breast cancer, particular the mental health aspect for entire families dealing with this health crisis. Kiwanis International was also honored for their continued support for the 1 in 9 Hewlett House, home of The Long Island Breast Cancer Action Coalition.
“People like Drs. Maurer and Seitelman who have dedicated their careers to curing cancer patients and working towards a cure are my heroes,” Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton said. “One of my greatest sources of pride is to be an advocate for women’s health and cancer concerns as a legislator, as well as a woman and a mother. I also sponsor mammography van events so that women without health insurance can receive free breast cancer screenings. Let’s all do our part to encourage friends and loved ones to get frequent screenings for early detection.”
