East Hills Man Accused of Head-Butting Police Officer

The man was arrested for assaulting a police officer Sunday afternoon, police say.

An East Hills man was arrested for assaulting a police officer after the officer was hospitalized for injuries caused by a head-butt Sunday afternoon, police say.

According to authorities, officers responded to a George Street home and placed resident Joseph Scarangella, 38, under arrest following an investigation at 4 p.m.

Scarangella, who was being escorted from the residence, head-butted an officer, causing both him and the officer to fall to the ground, police say. The officer suffered injuries to his face and knee and was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. No other injuries were reported.

Scarangella was charged with second-degree assault, resisting arrest and second-degree criminal contempt.
He will be arraigned Monday at First District Court in Hempstead.
