An Afternoon of Darfur Awareness

and the are pleased to co-sponsor a special event to raise consciousness about the situation in Darfur in the Sudan.

The acclaimed documentary film "The Devil Came on Horseback" will be shown at the library at 1:30 PM.  The film will be followed by a presentation by Susan Burgess-Lent, Program Director of Darfur Peace and Development Organization, Washington, DC who has recently returned from her fifth mission in Darfur.  A question and answer period will follow her presentation.

About the speaker:  Susan Burgess-Lent has been affiliated with Darfur Peace and Development Organization (www.DarfurPeace.org) since 2004.  DPDO programs include support of 38 schools in North Darfur, two women's centers to assist displaced women, and solar cooker training programs.  Prior to joining DPDO, Susan worked for 16 years in broadcast television, primarily as a news editor, for numerous networks including NBC, CBS, and Voice of America TV.  She has published many essays, short stores and "In the Borderlands", a novel set during the Rwandan genocide.  

About the Film: This is a documentary exposing the genocide in Darfur as witnessed by former
US Marine Captain Brian Steidle. After 6 months in Darfur as an unarmed monitor for the African Union,  Steidle resigned and returned to the United States to expose his first hand stories and extensive, graphic photographs of the atrocities-many from parts of the country which no journalist was able to penetrate.
