A Sense of Place features colorful, joyful paintings that explore the beauty of the natural world. For Tracey Luckner, whose paintings hang in the Port Washington Public Library’s Main Gallery this month, the act of painting is a chance to exhale and feel peace or let the colors and forms take her toward wonderment and joy.
The recent paintings in the series explore this spectrum of emotions that can help restore our personal energy. The paintings access these emotions through the colors and forms of the landscape – from the exuberance of spring or a beautiful starry night, to the peacefulness of a summer evening or a drive in the country.
Luckner starts some of the paintings with a physical landscape that she has a memory of. She uses colors and forms that made an impression on her while walking, driving, or looking out of an airplane window, and then she simplifies and abstracts them to communicate the emotional as well as physical essence of the experience. Other works take shape through the process of painting. In these, she lets intuition, accident and exploration drive the process until a sense of place emerges. In either case, her intention is to create and share a journey of renewal and discovery inspired by the beauty of the natural world.
