How Clean is Hempstead Harbor's Water?

The North Shore Kayak Club will host Eric Swenson, Executive Director of the Hempstead Harbor Protection Committee, on Tuesday July 17, at its monthly meeting in the Hagedorn Room of the Port Washington Public Library. The meeting, scheduled to start promptly at 7:30 PM, is open to the general public.

Mr. Swenson will outline some of the Committee's recent accomplishments, including: the June 2011 re-opening of 2,500 acres of the harbor to shellfish harvesting (after more than 40 years of being closed); the development of a Water Quality Improvement Plan and a Harbor Management Plan; and, the designation of the harbor as a federal No Discharge Zone. One result of the improvement to the harbor’s water quality has been the return of wildlife. The harbor now sports a nesting pair of Peregrine falcons, several nesting pairs of Osprey, and diamondback terrapins, among others.

Another topic to be addressed by Mr. Swenson will be the establishment of a“Blueway”; canoe and kayak trails connecting Little Neck Bay, Manhasset Bay, Hempstead Harbor, Oyster Bay Harbor and Cold Spring Harbor.
