Larissa Graham, Outreach Coordinator of the Long Island Sound Study, will focus on the problems facing the Sound and the status of progress when she appears as the guest speaker at the next meeting of the North Shore Kayak Club. It is scheduled for Thursday, October 20th at 7:30 pm, at the Community Chest Building ground floor conference room. The meeting is open to all and parking is available directly across the street at the town dock.
With twenty million people living within a 50 mile radius of Long Island Sound, maintaining a healthy ecosystem, while balancing human uses, presents a daunting challenge. The problems facing Long Island Sound are quite significant. Oxygen levels in some areas of the Sound have dropped to levels that have caused fish to die; and, the legacy of pollution discharged into the Sound has led to advisories on how much fish can be consumed. Ms. Graham will explain what has been done to combat these problems and what is planned for the future.
In 1985, the Long Island Sound Study was formed as a partnership and cooperative effort involving researchers, regulators, user groups, environmentalists and other concerned organizations and individuals.
Ms. Graham received a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science from the University of Connecticut and a Master of Science degree in Fisheries Science from Virginia Tech University. She has been working for the New York Sea Grant since January, 2008; primarily educating stakeholders about Long Island Sound.
