SANDWICHED IN: Ghosts, Folklore and Legends of the American Civil War. Out of the horrific struggle between the North and the South came tales of courage, cunning, humor and faith. Whether these folktales are true or not, they endure because of their ability to explain, counsel and console. Based on stories and oral histories gathered by some of America’s greatest folklorists, Long Island storyteller Janet Emily Demarest weaves prose, poetry and song to underscore the sometimes heart-wrenching, sometimes humorous tales. She reveals a portrait of how real Americans actually felt and spoke about the war — not the generals in the largest battles, but everyday people living through skirmishes, fear and moments of private reflection. An accomplished educator and historic researcher as well as playwright, Janet is the storyteller-in-residence at Old Bethpage Village Restoration.
