Finds for Father’s Day: Great Local Gift Ideas

Some local suggestions on what to get dad for his special day on Sunday.

Father's Day is fast approaching and many local residents are surely looking for that perfect last-minute gift for dad. It's easy to assume that many Port residents are in a similar boat so here are some great gift ideas that are sure to make your dad's day a special one.

If your father taught you everything you know about baseball, basketball, lacrosse, or any other sport for that matter, why not head down to Main Street and purchase some athletic gear from Arena Sports Center. Whether you are looking for quality, brand-name lacrosse sticks, bats and basketballs, or you just want a nice sweatshirt for dad, this is the place for you.

If your dad isn't the sporty type, but more of a technology buff, there are plenty of deals at RadioShack in the Soundview Shopping Center. They have a $258 refurbished Gateway Netbook or a $96 PylePro Dual 2-Way In-Wall Speaker to create your dad's ultimate sound system. They also have a $60 TomTom One 130 GPS Receive refurbished for an often-driving and/or directionally challenged dad. In addition, you could get a GE digital camera for $80 and he can capture moments like when you give him that great Father's Day present next year.

For the health and fitness oriented dad, you could buy him a one-month gym membership at The Training Station or Power Ten Fitness Club. If he's into supplements, you could also stop by the General Nutrition Center (GNC) and buy him ToGo Brands Green Tea Energy Fusion for $25, which is supposed to naturally rejuvenate energy. In addition, they have many supplements for muscle-growth, including Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard Rich Chocolate for $40.

Then for a more homebody kind of dad, we have lots of options to choose from at HomeGoods, many of which you can get for under $20, including a chocolate fondue set, a beautiful illustrated coffee table book on wine, or wine glasses. And speaking of wine, Black Tie Wine & Spirits is having a 30 percent off a case of wine sale on selected wines.

And then of course, for the suave and sophisticated father, which let's face it, most dads want to be considered, you could go all out and buy him a watch from the Sands Point Shop. They range from $175 for a Swiss Army watch to $225 for one of their Torgoen watches.

Let's hope these ideas help you discover something for dad on Father's Day. And for those of you going out at the last minute, let's hope these places are open on Sunday.
