General report – Fluking has been the ticket.  Striper action has been on the slow side with the sunny days and light winds.  Bunker are thick in the Western Sound.

Fly fishing – Water has been clean and clear (relative to the western sound).  The full moon will bring cinderworms so make sure to have your cinderworm flies.  If you are tying your own make some larger and some smaller than normal size.  Also try some odd colors.  You want your fly to stand out and get the stripers attention.

Fluke – Fluke bite is still going strong.  Number have been great all over.  Keepers were being caught off the front of Town Dock during dead low tide, middle of the day…. Gulp shrimp have been working really well when all else isn’t working.

Stripers – Fishing has been a mixed bag.  Small fish are plentiful with the occasional big boys mixed in.  Spots to the east have been producing larger fish.  East of Matinecock has been really good.  Hempstead harbor has been consistently producing good fish.

Bluefish – Snapperblue/ cocktail blues are in the Bay.  Big blues are working pods of bunker out in the Sound and occasionally in the entrance to the Bay.  Deadly Dicks and Kastmasters have been the ticket for the smaller blues off of Town Dock and beaches in the Bay.

Porgy fishing – Nice big porgies are being taken in the Oyster bay area.  Captain Rich Tenreiro reported 18” porgies on rocks in the Oyster Bay area.

Clamming – Clam grounds are open at the mouth of Hempstead Harbor.  The clamming grounds run from Prospect Point to the Falaise Mansion in Sands Point Preserve and across the mouth of Hempstead Harbor to the breakwater at the mouth of Hempstead Harbor and out to Matinecock Point.  So if you want to clam on the beach in Port Washington you can go to Sands Point Preserve and clam in the water off the beach.  If you walk past the preserve ground on the beach you must walk below the high tide line.  Above the high tide line is private property of the upland land owner.  Please be courteous.

Fisherman’s tip:  When fishing the beach don’t just romp into the water.  Fish can be feeding right against the shore.  Try a few casts along the beach to see if anything is going on.  Don’t get what I mean?  Ever been fishing on the beach and guys on boats are casting into the shore….
