FOL Announces Exciting Spring Events for All Ages

The Friends of the Library proudly announces its Spring Programs, which include intellectually stimulating events for all ages. Please save the following dates on your calendar:

 • Edmund L. Epstein Memorial Program, Sunday, March 16, 3 pm - 4:30 pm

Join the FOL in a program honoring Professor Edmund Epstein, an internationally known literary scholar who specialized in James Joyce. He was a long-time Port Washington resident known for his lectures at the library sponsored by the FOL and the book discussion group he led. He died April 1, 2012. This program features a performance of William Luce’s one-woman play “The Belle of Amherst” about the poet Emily Dickinson. Performed by Melanie Lipton.

 • FOL Paperback Swap: Bring DVDs, too! Saturday, March 22, 1 pm - 4 pm

The Friends of the Library’s popular Paperback Swap returns – and this time you can contribute your gently used DVDs too! DVDs must be operable and in original cases. DVDs for all ages accepted. Bring your adult, teen and children’s paperbacks— good condition only! — to the library’s meeting room for a free, friendly swap. We will accept hardcover children’s books including board books. No more than 20 books and 20 DVDs per person. Books and DVDs are not accepted in advance and we stop accepting items at the event at 3:30 p.m. Browsers welcome.

 • Meet Artist and Author Eric Fischl, Thursday, March 27, 7:30 pm - 9 pm

The Friends of the Library presents artist Eric Fischl, author of Bad Boy: My Life On and Off the Canvas. Renowned American artist Eric Fischl has written a penetrating, often searing exploration of his coming of age as an artist, and his search for a fresh narrative style in the highly charged and competitive New York art world in the 1970s and 1980s. With such notorious and controversial paintings as “Bad Boy” and “Sleepwalker,” Fischl joined the front ranks of America artists, in a high-octane downtown art scene that included Andy Warhol, David Salle, Julian Schnabel, and others. “Bad Boy” takes the reader on a roller coaster ride through the passion and politics of the art world as it has rarely been seen before. This event co-sponsored with the library’s Art Adivsory Council. • World Festival Sunday, March 30, 1 pm - 6 pm The Friends is a major sponsor of this daylong celebration of world cultures with many activities and exhibits planned.

The Edna Project,  Sunday, April 27, 3 pm - 4:30 pm

Please join the Friends for THE EDNA PROJECT: The poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay, set to music by Liz Queler and Seth Farber. This program will feature an eclectic, imaginative collection of 21 songs spanning folk, bluegrass, rock and jazz.
