Fuzzy Levane, Long-time Port Washington Resident, Died At 92

Andrew "Fuzzy" Levane, a long-time Port Washington resident, died Monday. He was 92.

A scout for the New York Knicks, Levane had also served as the team’s head coach from 1958 to 1960, according to ESPN. 

The son of a musician with the Metropolitan Opera, Levane as a child was encouraged by his father to learn saxophone and cello, according to The New York Post. But all Levane wanted to do was play ball. The younger Levane went on to play for St. John’s University from 1940-1943, and was named the Haggerty Award winner, rising to prominence in the world of basketball even though his father initially found the concept inconceivable. 

Active in the Port Washington community, in 2005 Fuzzy Levane served on a panel at about working with athletic children, as reported by Port Washington News.

Levane’s wife Katherine passed away in 2009 at age 85. 

The New York Times reported that he is survived by sons Lawrence and Andrew; daughters, Denise Kennedy, Theresa Van Lierop and Linda Forbes. He is also survived by a sister, Lucy Kay; 14 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
