Glen Cove Girls Basketball Falls to Port Washington

Big Red loses 35-30 in close game against Port Vikings.

After a 19-16 lead at halftime, the Big Red gave up six straight points to the Vikings to start the second half. It was this run that gave Port momentum and ultimately the 35-30 victory over Glen Cove.

In the fourth quarter the Big Red pulled within one point of Port off a layup by forward Nicole Alexander. It was not enough though as Port made the majority of their interior shots and pulled away from Glen Cove.

Turning Points: The beginning of the third quarter: The Vikings went on a 6-0 run to start the second half and went up by 3 points 22-19. The door was open for the Big Red to retake the lead but they only managed to score one basket by Eighth grader Hernandez in the third.

With 27 seconds left in the game, the Big Red were down three points. They had the chance to tie the game and tried to set Hernandez up with a three point shot. She was well defended though, and the possession came up empty. Port hit two free throws to finish off the game.

Quote: "I thought Port played awesome," said Glen Cove's Head Coach Gus Sirakis. "I thought we played well, but they were just better tonight. We are still a young team and it was a great learning experience for us."

"It was a true team victory," said Port Washington Coach Dennis Trottier. "We've had trouble scoring but our defense was as intense and aggressive as I'd hoped. I'm so proud of the entire team for their efforts.  It was a big win for us."

Bottom Line: It was a tough loss for the Big Red. They did not shoot nearly as well as they had in the Oyster Bay Tournament. They had too many sloppy possessions that resulted in multiple turnovers.
