Grammy Award Winner Kathy Mattea Pays Tribute to Jean Ritchie

Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter Kathy Mattea performed an accapella version of “In The Cool of The Day.” The song was written by none other than folk singer Jean Ritchie, who for many years called Port Washington home.

Before introducing the song, Mattea pointed out that Richie is a “hillbilly and a Fulbright scholar – I love that.”

Ritchie, who grew up in Kentucky, made her name in the folk music circuit by singing the songs from her youth – what others referred to as “hillbilly music.”

After moving to New York, where she sang with Oscar Brand, Peter Seeger and more, she eventually made her way to Port Washington.

Mattea will perform at Landmark on Main Street in Port Washington on Jan. 26 as part of its Roots Rock Series, hosted by WFUV’s John Platt.

Mattea will perform "Where've You Been?," "455 Rocket" and "Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses" along with selections from her new album celebrate the Appalachian culture of her home state of West Virginia.
