Help Clean & Green Main Street This Earth Day

Join dozens of community volunteers during Clean Green Main Street's spring planting and cleanup event on Saturday, April 22.

Yes, spring is finally here! And with it comes spring cleaning to welcome plants that are waking up from their winter hibernation. Residents For a More Beautiful Port Washington (Residents) and The Town of North Hempstead invite the entire community to join them on Saturday, April 22 (not coincidentally Earth Day!) at 9:00 a.m. for Clean Green Main Street.

This annual cleanup is perfect for families, individuals, teens, teams, troops and students, enlists dozens of volunteers to help spruce up Main Street for the growing season. Tool and materials pickup will be at the LIRR Station parking lot facing Main Street. Volunteers should just come wearing work clothes, a hat and sunscreen. The Town of North Hempstead will also have a table with a lot of sustainability information.

Residents will also launch its new “PW Gives a Litter Bit” campaign during the event. Fun and engaging “Litter Bit” activities for all ages are planned. This campaign is geared to motivate the entire community to work together to keep Main Street clean in a variety of ways.

Jake Diamond, Saige Gitlin, Julia Kim and Idell Rutman are the Schreiber High School juniors who make up this year’s Green Team Student Leadership Group. They will help organize groups of volunteers assigned to flower beds, tree wells and sidewalks to clean, clear, spread mulch and plant annuals.

“I’m really glad to be a part of the leadership team because protecting our environment is very important and there’s no better place to start than in our own community,” Green Team Leadership member Idell Rutman said. “Helping to lead this event is a special opportunity. Although we’re still teenagers, our involvement shows how it only takes one person to make a difference.” Residents thanks the Green Team Leaders and the Port Washington School District for their continual support.
