One Killed in Port Washington House Explosion

A massive explosion at a home on Prospect Avenue in Port Washington, occurring at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, left one person dead, authorities said.

Two houses are damaged on Prospect Avenue, and another on Second Avenue as well as a fourth structure, possibly a garage, according to officials.

The Port Washington Fire Department confirmed to Patch that at least one person had died from the explosion.

Four firefighters were injured, CBS New York reported.

“At this time the fire is under control,” the Port Washington Fire Department posted on its Twitter account at 9:55 p.m., “however fire ground operations are still underway.”

Still, authorities said the fire continues to burn.

The explosion occurred not far from Louie’s Oyster Bar and Grille on Lower Main Street. The blast could be heard from blocks away.

At 11:30 p.m., several blocks around the area were closed to traffic.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
