MANHASSET, NY—As the traditional ring of the bell signaled the playing of the “Trumpet Voluntary” and “Pomp and Circumstance,” both performed by the Manhasset Secondary School's wind ensemble, the Manhasset High School Class of 2019 proudly marched out of the building to the applause of beaming family and friends during the school’s 99th commencement ceremony, the district announced via press release.

Class of 2019 co-presidents Colin Holdreith and Cara Grace Kaplan initiated the festivities with the ringing of the bell, followed by their welcoming remarks.

“Over these four years I have witnessed this class become incredible public speakers, athletes, performers, researchers, but, most importantly, incredible people,” Kaplan stated. “I could not be prouder in having to calling these 279 graduates my peers, and classmates and friends for life.”

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Vincent Butera praised the class for their many outstanding academic, musical, artistic and athletic achievements, as well as their efforts to make the world a better place through volunteerism, fundraising and advocacy for one another.

“We are here to celebrate 279 young men and women, each with their own story, each with their own set of accomplishments, most yet unwritten…Even more impressive than their achievements are the qualities that have made those achievements possible,” said Butera, who shared a few examples of coming together for greater causes.

Salutatorian Fayfay Ning reflected back on several of the special times she spent bonding with her friends and classmates, referring to them as the most memorable experiences from her time at Manhasset Secondary School.

“Friendship , humor, teamwork, spirit. These are the things that have made the largest impact on us,” Ning said.

Valedictorian Sophie Vincoff echoed similar sentiments, reminding her fellow graduates to be sure to capture these moments in their minds, more so than on their phones.

“Even more importantly, be there when there is absolutely nothing picture-worthy,” Vincoff advised. “Your life is comprised mostly of the moments you don’t post about, so live them. You did it in kindergarten; you can still do it now!”

Board of Education President Regina Rule accepted the Class of 2019 gift from class treasurer Patrick Ryan Weber and class adviser Marcela Sepe: two new signs for Manhasset Secondary School. Silver M President Richard Bennett announced this year’s inductees into the Silver M Society, and the Senior Class Vocalists performed an enlightening rendition of “Seasons of Love” from Broadway’s “Rent.”

Additionally, this year’s retirees were honored, including Guidance Chairperson Jane Grappone. Principal Dr. Dean Schlanger asked that the graduates look to these retiring staff members as a source of inspiration for the dedication and professionalism they have shown, which can “serve as a meaningful roadmap on how to live a meaningful life.” Like the student speakers before him, Schlanger also expressed the importance of camaraderie.

“You are about to embark on the next phase of your lives. You have earned exemplary grades and countless awards and have also been given a great gift: the opportunity to grow into your adult selves to cultivate lifelong friendships among your classmates.”

Once Schlanger confirmed the Class of 2019, he, Butera, Rule and fellow Board members awarded the diplomas and congratulated the graduates. Then, in unison, tassels were turned, and caps were hoisted into the air, as members of the Class of 2019 officially ended the chapter of their lives at Manhasset Secondary School and took pride in all that they had accomplished, with an eye toward the bright future that lies ahead.
