Meet Elizabeth Jackson Sands in Elizabeth, a World Premiere Staged Reading
Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society presents a brand new play by local playwright Sara Lyons on April 9th at 7:30 pm.
The Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society will be presenting a world premiere of Elizabeth, a brand new play by local playwright Sara Lyons. Elizabeth tells the story of Elizabeth Jackson Sands, a notable Cow Neck resident and American Revolutionary heroine.
Set during the Revolutionary War, the play follows Elizabeth in her roles and journeys as mother, wife, farm manager and agent in an undercover munitions ring run from her Port Washington property, from the Battle of Brooklyn through to her daring contraband shipment run across the Long Island Sound. With the help of her friends, family, military contacts and slaves, she balances taking care of her family, raising her crops and cows, and running a contraband munitions smuggling ring out of her cellar and backyard for the Continental Army. This play is the first time that her story will be told as more than just a footnote on her husband's illustrious career, and the first time that her slaves will have voices at all.
Elizabeth is written and directed by Sara Lyons, and will be performed by members of the Paul D. Schreiber HS Drama Club, in partnership with the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society. The reading will take place on Saturday, April 9th at 7:30, and will run approximately 80-90 minutes, with a talk-back to follow. Admission is free and open to the public, and anyone attending will have the opportunity to donate money before and after the show, to keep historical research and student theatre going in Port Washington.
