New Fashion Boutique Dresses Up Lower Main Street

Schreiber grad opens shop, selling on trend looks at low end prices.

Red hot fashion doesn’t need to leave you stone cold broke. And if Aylin Hassan has her way, Port Washington women will soon be strolling through town wearing goods from her new boutique, , where every item retails for under $100. The store is at 275 Main Street in the space formerly occupied by the School of Rock.

“I’ve always been passionate about fashion,” said Hassan, who opened her boutique after stints working in the wholesale industry in New York City’s garment district. Hassan, who graduated from in 2001 and resides locally, describes her store’s wares as “a little bit of everything.”  “It’s trendy, colorful,” Hassan said. “It’s basics, but inspired basics.”

Hassan stocks her shop with an assortment of floaty spring dresses, gauzy tops and whisper-weight tees. Cargo pants, shorts and a wide assortment of accessories and jewelry round out the selection. Nothing in the store tops $100 and accessories begin at a recession-friendly $6.

Spring dresses bloom all over the store. A teal crochet-trimmed sundress, reminiscent of a recent Katie Holmes red carpet appearance in Ralph Lauren, retails at the very un-Ralph price of $42. Other short dresses include a diaphanous one-shoulder flowered print dress for $46 and a navy cotton floral v-neck for —gasp! —$26.  Want to rock a boho look? Try a maxi dress in royal blue and gold for $56.

Other items wearing can-it-be-true price tags include a grey and black striped tissue-weight sweater for $28 and the spring’s must-have trench in a fun cut for $54.

The bulk of Hassan’s inventory costs less than a tank of gas but the look and feel of the shop is luxurious. An all white and cream interior is accented with silver mirrors; a marble floor reflects a futuristic silver and crystal chandelier. Curtains in a silver zebra print adorn the three dressing rooms in lieu of doors. The rear of the store offers customers chaises and chairs for those needing a break from scooping up threads.

Janet Demelas recently accompanied her twenty-something daughter Natasha Pulaski to the shop. Demelas narrowed down her wish-list to two sundresses.  “I love everything,” said Demelas.  “If I could take everything I would.”

Shopper Sara O’Connor made a repeat visit to score a red top she eyed during an earlier browsing foray. “It’s perfect for my age,” the 28-year-old said of the store. “The prices are great. Everything I picked up was very reasonable.”

Hassan served up Skinnygirl margaritas during the . She hopes to offer other fun evenings including “prom hair” events  featuring tips from stylists, and she plans to introduce a line of feather hair accessories with advice on how to wear the trend, recently featured in "The New York Times.”

Customers seeking additional accessories can find bags, sunglasses, belts, jewelry and a selection of straw fedoras, retailing for $14. Colorful scarves abound at $12 a pop. The shop stocks Ark & Co., LA Made, Sugar Lips, Miss Me, Melie Bianco among others.  Hours are from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.
