NORTH HEMPSTEAD, NY — Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth announced Monday she will not seek re-election in the fall.

The 72-year-old Great Neck resident was re-elected to her fourth term in November 2019. She was first elected to the position in 2014. Bosworth, a Democrat and former Nassau County legislator, said in a statement the coronavirus pandemic was "a time of deep reflection for her" and reinforced how important spending time with family is.

“So often, I have thought about the many things I would like to do in the future, and I’ve come to the realization that the future is now,” Bosworth stated. “As many in Town Hall know, I often say, ‘Family First.' Now is the time for me to take my own advice.”

Bosworth said that when her term concludes, she looks forward to spending more time with her husband, Jay, and her children and grandchildren. “Change is healthy and now is the right time for me to conclude my tenure in office,” she said.

Bosworth, who previously held a seat on the Great Neck Board of Education, said her mission has always been public service. She said she has been proud to participate in the political process and called it an honor to serve the town's constituents.

She said she has every confidence municipal officials and employees “will maintain the standards of transparency, accountability, and fiscal oversight that have been my guiding principles in government.”

She added, “Public service is not defined by the office you hold. It is defined by the love you have for your community and neighbors, and by being there for them. By that standard, I will always be engaged in public service."

Bosworth’s colleagues offered their support upon hearing the news.

Fellow Democrat State Senator Anna Kaplan, whose virtual inauguration Bosworth spoke at last week, described the lawmaker as a friend and role model for years, saying it has been an “honor to work alongside her as a colleague in government since she first took office.” “Judi is, above all else, a public servant who cares, who works hard, and who never gives up,” Kaplan stated in a news release issued by her press office. “While I will certainly miss working with Judi to serve our shared constituents in the Town of North Hempstead, I congratulate her on a towering career in public service, and wish her all the best for some well-deserved time with her husband Jay, her children, and grandchildren."

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran called Bosworth not only a tireless public servant for three decades, but also “a dear friend,” saying that it has been an honor to work alongside her.

“Judi has led by example of how local government can work for the people — striving to increase ethics, transparency and public participation in North Hempstead. I thank her for her dedicated service to the Town of North Hempstead and Nassau County and I wish her luck in her retirement,” Curran stated in a news release.

Town of Hempstead Supervisor Donald X. Clavin, Jr. said that he could attest to Bosworth’s “sincere devotion to the people and places she so passionately serves.”

“Throughout her public service career, Supervisor Bosworth has remained a stalwart community advocate during her tenure as a school board trustee, county legislator and town supervisor,” Clavin stated in a news release. “I wish Supervisor Bosworth well in her future endeavors, and hope she continues lending her voice and experience as an engaged member of civic life in the Town of North Hempstead after the conclusion of her term.”
