PHOTOS: Port Washington Lights the Menorah on Main Street
The pleasant weather brought out a large turnout on Sunday.

PORT WASHINGTON, NY— More than 300 people were in attendance to celebrate the start of Chanukah with the lighting of the grand menorah at the LIRR on Main Street on Sunday.
The pleasant weather brought out a large turnout while community leaders helped kickstart the eight-day celebration.
Schreiber High School Tri M Music Honor Society students entertained the crowd with some holiday-appropriate tunes while the first 200 people that showed up were handed special embroidered event scarves, which were donated by Adele and Michael Greif of EmbroideMe of Williston Park.

Many organizations in the community helped make the event possible through their generous donations:
- Starbucks donated coffee to the event
- Everfresh of Great Neck donated latkes and jelly donuts
- Maura Bros. donated the erecting of the 14-foot menorah
- Supreme Auto donated the repainting of the menorah

- Gloria Glantz is pictured lighting up the giant Menorah, along with Rabbi Paltiel of Chabad and Supervisor Judi Bosworth. Paltiel and Bosworth lit up the Shamash (center serving candle) on the eve of the first night of Chanukah.
- The high school’s Tri M Music Honor Society members opened the event with the Star Spangled Banner and a variety of Chanukah songs.
- Leibel Paltiel had the honor of serving as a the event’s dancing dreidel mascot.
- Jason Shurka is pictured in front of his family’s Chanukah mobile.
The event also thanked:
- The Port Washington Police Department for the security
- The Port Washington Fire Department for providing the light truck
- The Town of North Hempstead for providing the Show Mobile
- Able Equipment for donating the use of the lift for the entire eight days of the holiday
