In the past, pickleball has often been regarded as a sport for older people, however, the past few years have witnessed a rapid popularization of the sport. What was started as a game created by three dads trying to keep their kids entertained, pickleball has now garnered over 36 million players across the world. The pickleball craze has taken hold of the Port Washington community, with Schreiber gym classes doing units on the sport and clinics being offered around town.

The game resembles a unique combination of badminton, tennis, and ping pong, however, it is considered to be a more accessibile and inclusive alternative. Unlike most traditional sports that can require years of training and can be physically tolling, pickleball can be enjoyed by all ages and skill levels. In terms of tennis, pickleball is played on a much smaller court, typically less than half the size. This reduces the physical strain on players and is specifically appealing to the game's older audience who may struggle with joint pain or muscle tension. Pickleball is also played with an underhand stroke and is therefore less exhausting on the arm. The lightweight paddles and the slower-moving plastic ball also allow for better control and ease of play, making it less challenging for beginners. It can also be modified according to skill level, ranging from casual play to highly competitive games. According to SPORTTIME Port Washington instructor David Radisch, “you can pick it up and play decently very quickly comparared to other sports. While tennis, for example, can take quite a while for some people to start playing at this sort of level, pickleball most people can pick up after a few lessons.” The game is considered to be on the more affordable side of sports, with rackets ranging between $30-100.

Pickleball’s sociable nature is another thing that appeals to many players. The sport has created a diverse, welcoming community composed of all sorts of abilities and ages. The game encourages players to foster friendships and teamwork. Radisch explains “whereas in tennis you usually rent out a court with four people and that's who you play with, with pickleball you are able to go to a public court by yourself and just play with other people. In pickelball, players are constantly mixing in, forming new sets of four to go in next with, and when your match is over you all go to the paddle box and put your things away together. The sociable nature is what a lot of people love about the sport. Not to mention, it’s fun!” The friendly atmosphere of the game is an integral part of how it became so popular.
