Police: Drunken Woman With Snake Around Her Neck Crashes Into Firehouse

Sarah Espinosa, 22, stole the snake from Petco just prior to the crash in New Hyde Park Monday night, police say.

A drunken Albany woman stole a snake from a pet store and then proceeded to crash her car into the New Hyde Park firehouse, damaging two fire trucks inside a garage, police said.

As firefighters rendered aid to Sarah Espinosa, 22, they removed the stolen small ball python from around her neck, police said.

Espinosa faces several misdemeanor charges following the bizarre incident that began when police say Espinosa stole the snake from a Petco store in Garden City Park.

Soon after, Espinosa drove her 2010 Toyota Prius over the center median on westbound Jericho Turnpike and crashed into a Nissan Maxima. Her car then plowed through the front garage door of the New Hyde Park firehouse, at 1555 Jericho Turnpike, and struck two fire trucks inside, police said.

Espinosa was arrested shortly after 7 p.m. She was treated and released from a local hospital for minor injuries, police said. No one else was injured in the incident.

Espinosa is charged with second degree reckless endangerment, DWI, reckless driving, petty larceny and unlawful possession of marijuana. She will be arraigned on Tuesday at First District Court in Hempstead.

The snake is safely back at Petco.
