Port Washington Cheerleaders enroll in "Game Day" division
For the first time, the Port Washington Cheerleaders will be competing in "Game Day" Competitions

Beginning this Fall, the Port Washington cheerleaders will be bringing their spirit and pep across Long Island in what are known as “Game Day competitions.” A celebration of traditional cheerleading, this division has more emphasis on the team’s energy and ability to lead a crowd. A Game Day routine is composed of four sections: Band Chant, Situational Sideline, Crowdleading Cheer, and a Fight Song. Each of these sections bring their own flair to the routine, making it an exciting watch.
Kicking off the routine, the Band Chant sets the tone for the routine. A dance-cheer fusion, the Band-Chant incorporates both elements of crowd leadership and those of a traditional dance. In this section, sharp movements, line changes, and jumps, meet spirit and team slogans.
Moving on to Situational Sidenline, this portion hones in on the “Game Day” roots of the sport. The judges will make a call signifying whether the team is on offense or defense, for example “It’s 1st and 10 for the Vikings (Offense),” and in response, the team will perform their corresponding cheer. As the judges make the call on the spot, teams have both an offense and defense cheer prepared.
Transitioning to the Crowdleading Cheer, this section is a culmination of the team's abilties, embracing stunting, cheering, tumbling, and dancing. Diverging from traditional competitions, the difficulty of the stunts are not weighed into a team’s score. Instead, visuals– whether that be flags, signs, megaphones, or all of the above– are used to enhance the routine.
Finishing off, the fight song derives inspiration from the team’s school. Combining sharp movements, chanting/and or singing, and stunting, this peppy number is for teams to showcase their school pride and end the routine.
