Port Washington Children’s Center Learns All About Groundhog Day

Students at the Port Washington Children's Center Recently Celebrated Groundhog Day

Students at the Port Washington Children’s Center recently celebrated Groundhog Day with an engaging and educational program that combined science, creativity and seasonal tradition.

During the activity, students explored the concept of shadows by discovering their own and learning the science behind how shadows are created. Through hands-on discussion and observation, children gained a basic understanding of how light and objects interact to form shadows.

The students also learned about the famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, and discovered that several towns across the country have their own groundhogs that help predict whether winter will continue or if spring will arrive early.

Students expressed their creativity by coloring their own Groundhog Day posters, bringing the fun and learning of the day together in a colorful keepsake.

After learning about the tradition and coloring their posters, the children were so excited to make their own predictions about whether the groundhog would see his shadow this year. They enthusiastically cast their votes by placing “yes” or “no” stickers on a large visual display, further engaging them in the classroom activity.
