Port Washington Police Issue Summons, Warnings at Crosswalk Enforcement

Drivers failed to stop at the crosswalk, and pedestrians did not use the crosswalk, police said.

Port Washington Police issued summonses and warnings to drivers and pedestrians during a one-day enforcement operation on July 31 at the crosswalk on Main Street near Herbert Avenue, authorities said.

Police issued 20 summonses to drivers, 18 for not stopping at the crosswalk; 30 warnings to motorists for not stopping at the crosswalk; 19 pedestrian warnings for not using the crosswalk; and six bicyclist warnings for miscellaneous unsafe operation, according to Deputy Chief Robert Del Muro.

In addition police made one arrest for aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, with nine suspensions.

The operation was performed between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The area generates pedestrian traffic from commuters traveling by Long Island Rail Road and the bus stop located across the street from the railroad station.

The Port Washington Police District launched the initiative to help improve pedestrian safety.

Funding for the effort comes from the Police Services Grant through the Nassau County Traffic Safety Board and is provided by the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.
